Jim Hofheimer focuses his expertise on defined contribution plans, defined benefit plans, foundations and endowments, as well as select high net worth individuals. Before joining Toroso, Jim was with Rothschild as Vice President, Senior Institutional Consultant and Corporate Retirement Consultant. Previously, he was at Salomon Brothers, initially on the institutional desk and later growing the firm’s futures operation into one of the largest at the Chicago Board of Trade. Following Salomon Brothers he founded Hofheimer Commodities before joining Morgan Stanley in 1998.
Jim is a graduate of the Certified Investment Management Analyst program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, the Accredited Investment Fiduciary program at the Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh, a Certified Retirement Planning Specialist, and has an MBA degree from the J.L. Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Jim is also a past member of the Board of Directors of the Chicago Board of Trade, Home Federal Bank, Highland Park Hospital, Blythedale Children’s Hospital and a current member of the Executive Board of The Forward Association, and a chairperson of FINRA Dispute Resolution.
Juan Carlos Avila
Juan is Managing Partner at Toroso Investments, LLC, a registered investment advisory firm committed to providing its clients with strategies that allow them to express their economic point of view, consistent with their risk tolerance and time horizon, through core asset allocation and income strategies that are intended to perform well in all economic climates. Juan provides investment advisory and retirement plan advisory services to clients, which include high net worth individuals, business owners, public and private corporations, public sector entities, and not-for-profit entities and foundations.
Juan has 25 years of financial service industry experience. Prior to joining Toroso, he spent 3 years as a Senior Vice President with Mesirow Financial where he co-led an investment advisory practice. Prior to joining Mesirow Financial, Juan spent 19 years at Merrill Lynch where he was a Senior Financial Advisor, Vice President, with the Private Client Group.
Juan serves as Trustee for the Policeman’s Annuity & Benefit Fund of Chicago, Board Chair for the Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement (HACE) and as a Trustee for National Louis University. He received his bachelor of science degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and his masters in business administration degree from Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management.
Juan received the 2016 Servant Leadership Award from the Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement (HACE). In 2014 Juan was named to Negocios Now “Who’s Who in Hispanic Chicago” inaugural edition and recognized as the Chicago State University Latino Resource Center Corporate Citizen Honoree. In 2011 he earned the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®) professional designation. That same year Chicago United recognized Juan as its Most Valuable Partner and the Chicago Latino Network voted Juan the Latino Professional of the Year. Olga has 17 years of financial services industry experience. Prior to joining Toroso Investments, she was a Senior Vice President with Mesirow Financial co-leading an investment advisory practice specializing in culturally-relevant financial services to minority markets. Prior to that, Olga was at JPMorgan Chase and Thomson Reuters.
Olga was appointed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel to The Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority Board. She also serves as a member of The Metropolitan Planning Council Board of Governors and its investment committee; serves on the finance committee for Frances Xavier Warde School; and, is a member of The Rotary Club of Chicago, and a member of New America Alliance’s American Latina Leadership Caucus. She previously served on The Chicago Plan Commission, and as treasurer for the Chicago Cook Partnership Workforce Investment Board.

Over 20 years experience in financial services primarily serving 401(k) and retirement plans at his own RIA firm, BenefitStreet, and Fidelity. Leads Toroso’s northeast 401(k) advisory practice specializing open-architecture and fiduciary services.
John is an investment advisor on Qualified Retirement Plans & Individuals. Before joining Toroso, he had created and operated an RIA Firm that accounted for the needs of the plan sponsor and always put the participants first, while focusing entirely on the service of Qualified Retirement Plans. There, he achieved an average revenue growth rate of 20% per year.
Previously, he was a Sales Executive at BenefitStreet, where he was responsible for establishing relationships with RIAs, Accountants, Attorneys, and payroll companies that marketed qualified retirement plans to their clientele. He closed $20 million dollars in qualified retirement plan assets and achieved a close rate of 90%
Throughout his career that spans over two decades, John lead and implemented a variety of retirement plans and portfolios, at world renowned retirement providers Fidelity Investments and Automatic Data Processing.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management and is Licensed in Series 65.
Senior Registered Associate
Sandra Lake is a senior registered associate with Toroso Advisors. She is responsible for various aspects of client service, administrative and operational functions. Sandra has been working with Jim for more than 7 years.
She previously worked in the wealth management office for two wealthy families. In addition, she worked as a registered associate at Smith Barney and Morgan Stanley for 9 years.
She is a graduate of the University of Alaska, Anchorage with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
